Application Process
Candidates must complete and submit the following:
- Part 1: Application Form
- Includes Applicant and Employer details, with sections for the employer to verify the candidate’s experience and training.
- Part 2: Skills Self-Analysis
- Candidates self-assess their knowledge and skills, which determines their readiness for the program.
- Part 3: Endorsement of Operating Competence
- An employer must confirm the candidate’s competency in specific tasks.
Additionally, candidates must provide a passport-sized photo and appropriate safety gear (helmet, boots, reflective jacket, and gloves) on the day of the assessment.
One-Day Programme Structure
- Induction: Registration and initial checks.
- Corrective Training: A 3-hour session focusing on eliminating unsafe practices and reinforcing proper techniques. The instructor can disqualify candidates with hazardous habits.
- Theory Test: A 45-minute multiple-choice exam covering legislation, safety, machine operations, and more. A minimum of 70% is required to pass; 85% earns a credit.
- Practical Test: Candidates perform specific tasks with the Mini Digger, demonstrating their competency. The test includes pre-start checks, maneuvering, excavation, and loading.

Content & Requirements
Candidate Eligibility
To participate, candidates must:
- Have at least 6 months of full-time experience as a trainee Mini Digger operator in a quarry within the last 2 years, as per the Safety, Health, and Welfare at Work (Quarries) Regulations 2008.
- Have completed Health and Safety Awareness Training.
- Be at least 18 years old.
Certification and Feedback
Successful candidates receive a CSCS card and a QQI certificate. Those earning credits in both theory and practical tests receive an overall credit. Candidates failing either component receive feedback and may retake the practical test if the theory is passed.
Special Requirements
Candidates needing accommodations (e.g., a translator or special assistance) must inform the training organization in advance.
This program ensures that Mini Digger operators are proficient in the safe operation of equipment within a quarry setting, leading to recognized certification.
