Back to Basics: Building a Culture of Safety from the Ground Up
The Construction Industry Federation’s 2025 campaign, “Back to Basics,” is a timely reminder that safety doesn’t have to be complicated. This year’s theme takes us back to what really matters, good leadership, strong communication, and a culture that values care as much as compliance.
At KTC Safety, we see the truth of that every day. Safe sites aren’t built by paperwork or posters, they’re built by people. Real safety lives in the habits, attitudes, and shared values of everyone on site. When safety becomes part of how work is done, not just something added on, that’s when culture takes hold.

Leadership: Where Culture Starts
Every safe project begins with leadership, not just from management, but from anyone willing to set the right example. True safety leadership isn’t about authority; it’s about influence. It’s the supervisor who stops work to check a harness, the foreman who listens to a concern, or the crew member who reminds a colleague to clip on.
When leaders model the behaviour they expect, others follow. It’s those everyday actions that send the strongest message: we care about safety because we care about people.
Working Near Utilities: Respect What You Can’t See
Some of the most dangerous hazards are the ones we can’t see, buried cables, live lines, underground services. A single mistake can have life-changing consequences. That’s why we always stress the five golden rules:
- Assume live
- Check drawings
- Contact ESB
- Keep safe distances
- Always stop and think
We’ve seen how a quick pause before digging or lifting can prevent a serious incident. It’s not luck, it’s discipline, awareness, and teamwork.
New Starters: Laying the Foundation for the Future
Every experienced operator, scaffolder, or plant driver started as a new entrant. The habits formed early on often stay for life, which makes those first few weeks crucial.
That’s why good inductions, mentoring, and communication matter. When new starters see that safety isn’t optional, that it’s the way things are done, they carry that mindset forward. Experienced workers play a key role here too, by taking time to guide, explain, and set the tone for what “safe” looks like.
A culture of safety grows strongest when every new person feels supported, valued, and responsible.
Critical Risks: Focus on What Matters Most
Some tasks carry greater consequences than others, those are the critical risks. Lifting operations, working at height, moving plant, confined spaces, and live services all demand extra care. These are the moments where experience, planning, and communication matter most.
The “Back to Basics” message here is simple: take time to think before you act. Review your controls. Check your equipment. Talk through the plan. It only takes seconds, but it can prevent a lifetime of regret.
Falls from Height: Small Steps, Big Impact
Falls remain the leading cause of fatalities in construction, and yet they’re almost always preventable. Simple habits make the difference: inspecting your ladder, securing your scaffold, keeping three points of contact, and following the 4-to-1 rule for setup.
It’s easy to think “it’ll only take a minute”, but safety doesn’t stop for speed. Every short job deserves the same attention as the big ones. Those who take care with the basics are the ones who go home saf
Building a Culture of Safety: Why It Matters
A culture of safety isn’t built overnight. It grows from shared values, consistent leadership, and open communication. It’s in the quiet moments, the toolbox talk before a shift, the decision to stop and check, the conversation between co-workers, that culture takes root.
When safety becomes part of your identity, not just your instruction, everything changes. People start to look out for each other, not because they have to, but because they want to. That’s the difference between compliance and care, and it’s what makes our industry stronger.
The CIF’s Back to Basics campaign is a reminder that safety doesn’t need to be complicated. It just needs to be genuine. The basics, good habits, good leadership, and good communication, are what keep people safe, day after day, site after site.
At KTC Safety, we’re proud to support this year’s campaign and continue helping teams across Ireland build safer, stronger, and more caring workplaces, one decision, one conversation, and one safe act at a time.
